✍🏻The Teacher as Editor - Embracing the Potential of Google LTI in Canvas

For years, writing instruction focused on students writing, revising their work on their own, and then teachers grading with detailed feedback once students turned in their final work. This resulted in feedback happening after the fact, with little time or motivation for students to return to their work to make revisions to improve their final product. Using Google LTI in Canvas can flip that script. By using outline and planning templates, teachers can give students more direction and direct feedback while they are writing their papers and before they turn then in for a final grade. Using commenting and suggestion tools turns teachers into professional editors, directly pointing out writing weaknesses and giving students the opportunities to make those corrections before final due dates. This approach can take the writing workshop to a new level. This real-world approach to the writing process rewards revision and growth mindset and can transform writing and grading practices.

🌉Bridging Literary Eras With Pop Culture

We call pieces of literature “classics” when the impact of a story speaks to multiple generations. Unfortunately, as the years increase between the classics we loved when we were young and the students we are teaching now, it can become increasingly difficult to get our students engaged in reading older literature. One way to bridge this era gap is the application of pop culture in the classroom. Pop culture is the media that our students are consuming at a given moment, whether it be through TV, film, music, or social media. These modern mediums capture historical and social moments as they are happening. Like classic pieces of literature, pop culture pieces speak to our human experience and can help us show how the innate human experience crosses decades and generations through the stories we love. We show how teachers can do this using examples such as: - You've Got Mail & Dracula as epistolary texts - American Born Chinese & Frankenstein as frame story - Rosaline & Romeo & Juliet as narrative point of view - Fire Island, Bride & Prejudice, & Pride & Prejudice as classic adaptations

✍🏻Your Story Matters: Finding Your Writer Era

Teachers are people too, and after many years of teaching, we also have stories to tell. For many of us, those stories aren't just about teaching, but about who we are outside of the classroom. We don't need to be teacher influencers or build large audiences to have our stories matter. But learning how to tell our stories can help us process our experiences, heal when we are hurting, and help others who are also going through similar experiences. With the resurgence of blogging and the increased prevalence of self-publishing tools, there are many different ways to tell your story without building a toxic social media presence. This presentation walks teachers through: 1) People with day-jobs who became writers after the fact 2) The tools for writing only for your own purposes (fiction or non-fiction) 3) How to transition that writing to a small audience 4) The steps to branching out to a bigger audience as you share a story that matters to you In the end, you should feel inspired to write, even if it is just in your personal journal.
